Booting Up - The Daily Ritual

The most important thing on the Camino is to take care of your feet. Walking day after day for miles and miles can really take a toll on your feet and toes. It is important to prevent blisters if at all possible. And if you do get a blister, the right bandage can keep you walking.

We had an evolving morning ritual, developed by trial and error. It seemed to work for us so we thought we would share it. Ian religiously followed it from the start and had no blisters. Pam was initially a bit lax. And she paid the price, earning  blisters on each foot. Her blisters had blisters after the first few days, then she too got some religion!

Putting our boots on took a while! It wasn't simply a matter of pulling on some socks, slipping into our boots and walking out the door.

Step 1. Apply adhesive moleskin, cut to fit, or generic bandages to potential hotspots.

Use Bandaid Blister Gel Guards to cover existing blisters. These provide great cushioning and last 2 or 3 days.

When you run out, pick up the European equivalent called Compeed.

Apply generic bandages liberally anywhere else they are needed.

Step 2.  Apply Voltaren, an NASID cream, to areas in pain. This must be purchased in a European pharmacy. It cost about $15. It is unavailable in the US. It is a miraculous ointment and Ian's new best friend!

Step 3. Apply Hiker Goo liberally. This is messy and sticky stuff. Try not to get it all over your other clothes!

Step 4. Put on (moisture wicking) toe socks. These cute socks always make Pam smile.

Step 5. Use a cut-to-fit foam cushion on any sore toes. These take some maneuvering to get on with the toe socks!

Step 6. Put on second pair of socks. Wool hiking socks worked great for us.

Step 7. Finally time to put on the well broken in boots! At least a half size bigger than you normally wear. There's a lot if space needed for all the stuff!!

Step 8. Walk for a bit, then adjust laces for a better fit. Repeat (for Ian).

Step 9. Pack all bandages, creams and goo in backpack. You will need to reapply during the day.

Step 10. Take a rest. It is hard work booting up!
