Last day as tourists in Porto

Tuesday was our last day playing tourist. Our first stop was the stunning Carmo Church with its outside covered in azulejo tiles showing the founding of the Carmelite Order.

Inside was a riot of Rococo gold leaf.

Then we visited the most beautiful bookstore in the world. Supposedly JK Rowling, who worked in Porto at one point, was inspired by the interior. It certainly has a Harry Potter feel to it.

And the ceiling was gorgeous.

After that it was off to another church. The  Clerigos Church has a 250-foot tower. Pam climbed to the top.

And Ian contemplated the Baroque interior with its wedding cake altar.

We finished up the day with a Taste of Porto food tour. We got to try lots of different food and were taken around by an enthusiastic native. One of our favorite things we tried was canned needle-nose fish with hot peppers. Portugal's fishing industry has come up with all sorts of new tinned fish. The shop we visited was lined with hundreds of different kinds.

Our last stop was a Port wine tasting. We found some we really liked and even arranged to have a few bottles  shipped home.
